Here are my general rules for choosing to fly on budget airlines.
- Always fly nonstop. These airlines are usually riddled with delays and cancellations. You’re incredibly likely to get stranded on your layover.
- Make sure it’s a short trip. Once you start having to pack more than a backpack, the fees for carry-ons and checked luggage usually overcome any savings you get for the ticket price.
- Always bring snacks. They overcharge for everything, including those 35k ft peanuts.
- Always bring a water bottle and fill it up at the airport. Water bottles must be empty going through security, but feel free to bring an empty water bottle. If you’re buying water in the airport, you’re not much better off than buying it from a budget airline.
- Make sure you’re flying on an already cheap trip. Airlines are not obligated to pay out for expenses lost due to flight cancellations or delays. Losing out on a $50/nt hotel is very different than losing out on a $10k Alaskan Cruise.
- Find flights early in the day. If the airplane is at the airport all night, it’s less likely to be delayed or canceled.
- Find flights with multiple flights a day from your location to your destination. Flight canceled due to a sick crew? No problem, they can put you on the next one.
- And check to see if your credit card pays out for flight cancellations or delays. Some Credit Cards come with some kind of Trip Insurance.
- Know your rights. If a flight is canceled, do not accept anything but your money back. They are legally obligated to refund you.
